My previous Mint was 17.3 & I had the same experience as you, oddly it was only disconnecting when using ProtonVPN. I have subs to 3 other VPN providers & never experienced an auto-disconnect in Linux Mint. When I re-tested ProtonVPN on Linux Mint 18.3 everything was OK, no more disconnects, give it a try and see what happens.
